Sibal asks for common curriculum for all schools

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal pushed another reform in the education system by calling on all schools to have a common curriculum. Now, the science and mathematics curriculum for class XI and XII will be same across all boards from academic year 2011-12. Entrance tests conducted by universities, colleges and institutes will be based on this common syllabus.

This move is aimed to bring uniformity in the field education. It will provide a level playing field to all students in terms of basic knowledge. But some critics say that Sibal has been over active in matter of education reforms since his appointment as HRD minister. Students, schools and parents are not able to handle so many changes in so brief time. Implementation is another uphill task. They say instead of a common curriculum, schools should be given right to a percentile system which allows students of different boards to be judged on similar basis and no more on the basis of percentage which they get.
