Delhi government is preparing on a massive scale to provide a secure, safe and highly entertaining Commonwealth Games which will be held in October, 2010. Since, there would be one lakh visitors and delegates and players, Delhi’s roads would need some clearing to ease the traffic during Games.
To achieve this, Delhi government has decided to shut all schools in the city for 17 days during Games. Because students-buses, autorickshaws and private vehicles are the main transportation vehicles causing congestion during morning and afternoon times. This is autumn break which will begin from October 1 to October 17. The games will be played between October 3 to 14. So, schools will reopen after Dussehra and Vijayadashami which will be observed on October 17. Usually, the autumn break is for 8 days. Now, since it would be of 17 days, summer break will be pruned to 49 days instead of 61 days.
Delhi government took the move after studying a report by the National Capital Regional Planning Board (NCRPB).
